Union County honors hometown music legend Randy Travis

MARSHVILLE – The Union County Board of Commissioners has honored country musician Randy Travis with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Commissioners presented the award Sept. 19 during the Randy Travis Music Festival in recognition of his career, contributions to country music and the pride his accomplishments have brought to Marshville and Union County.

“Randy Travis’ career has taken him from Union County to audiences around the world, but Marshville and Union County will always be where his story began,” said Brian Helms, chair of the Union County Board of Commissioners. “We are proud to recognize his remarkable legacy and proud to call him one of our own.”

His 1986 album “Storms of Life” launched a career that would include 23 No. 1 singles and more than 25 million records sold. He has won many awards, including seven Grammy Awards and 11 Academy of Country Music statuettes. Travis was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 1986 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016.

“To some, this award may seem like just another on the shelf for Mr. Travis, but it’s much more than that,” Commissioner Clancy Baucom said. “It recognizes that through all his extraordinary accomplishments over the last four decades, his home community and Union County have always supported him.”

Travis has continued to make improvements since suffering a near-fatal stroke in 2013, with support from his wife, Mary, and physical therapy. He remains involved in the annual Randy Travis Music Festival in Marshville.
